"He is old enough to go to school."と "He is so old that he can go to school."は同じ意味か？

▼学習英文法では「"... enough to ～" の形は "so ～ that ..." の形で言いかえられる」「"so ～ that ..." の形は "... enough to ～" の形で言いかえられる」と教えることが多いようです。たとえば次の (1) の書きかえ問題は b. の空所に "so" と "that" を，(2) の書きかえ問題は b. の空所に "enough" と "to" を入れなければなりません。

(1)
a. He is rich enough to travel first -class.
b. ＝He is ( ) rich ( ) he can travel first -class.

(2)
a. He is so rich that he can travel first -class.
b. ＝He is rich ( ) ( ) travel first -class. 　

でも，この２つの形は同じ意味ではありません。"... enough to ～" は「～するのに必要なだけ…」を意味します。たとえば次の (3) はこの川がクイーンエリザベス号が入ってこれるくらい深いと言っているのではありません。

(3) The river is deep enough to swim in.

かろうじて泳げるくらいの深さがあるといっているだけですから，だれが泳ぐかにもよりますが，１メートルくらいの深さではないでしょうか。 　

それに対して，"so ～ that ..." は「とても～なので…」を意味します。Swan (1995, §513.1) は，次の (4) では so の部分を very を使ってパラフレーズしています。

(4) It was so cold that we couldn't go out.
＝It was very cold weather, and because of that we couldn't go out.

Eastwood (1994, §247.3) は次の (5) について "the plants are dying" は "the result of the ground being very dry" であると言っていますが，dry の程度を表すのに very を使っています。

(5) The ground is so dry (that) the plants are dying. 　

(1a) の "He is rich enough to travel first-class." からは，彼が大金持ちではないかもしれないが，ファーストクラスで旅行するくらいの金はあるという感じ受けます。それに対して，"He is so rich that he can travel first-class."を聞くと，彼が新宿に300平方キロの土地をもっていると聞いても，特に驚かないかもしれません。 　

▼さて，タイトルの問いの答えは Yes でしょうか，それとも Noでしょうか。"He is old enough to go to school." は，５～６歳の子どもについて，彼が就学年齢に達していると言っています。それに対して，"He is so old that he can go to school." の "he" は 70歳，80歳の高齢者を想像させます。高齢だから学校に行けるというのは奇妙ですね。次の (6) ならいいでしょうが。

(6) He is so old that he can remember World War II.

答えは No.です。 　
"He is so old that he can go to school." は次のような状況で使われることがあるかもしれません。就学年齢に達していない３～４歳の子どもたちが遊んでいて，その中にほかの子どもたちより少し年長 の子どもがまじっているとしましょう。この場面を見たある親が，その子どもはグループから抜けたほうがよいと思って，"He is so old that he can go to school!" と言うことがあるかもしれません。この場面では「彼はほかの子どもよりずっと年が上だ」という意味で使われています。この "he" は高齢者ではなく，せいぜい５～６歳でしょう。でも，この "He is so old that he can go to school." も，"He is old enough to go to school." と同じ意味になるわけではありません。 　

"... enough to ～" は「～するのに必要なだけ…」という意味ですから，実際に～するかどうかは場面で判断することになります。たとえば次の (7) では，彼が実際にロックし忘れたのか，ロックし忘れるくらいうかつなやつだったと言っているのかあいまいです。

(7) He was foolish enough to leave his car unlocked. 　

また，"so ～ as to ..." という形がありますが，次の (8) は彼が実際にロックし忘れたという意味しかありません。

(8) He was so foolish as to leave the door unlocked.

この形は日本の英語教育では割合多く教えられていますが，実際にはあまり使われません。私のインフォーマントは，"so ～ as to ..." は archaic と判断します。ただし，その人も，次の (9) については extremely formal だけれども，ときどき使われると言います。

(9) Would you be so kind as to open the window, please?

Thomson & Martinet (1986, §252C) も同じ判断をしています。

▼"enough" には that節を従える用法もあります。次の (10) を見てください。

(10) The pig is fat enough that we can eat it.--Jackendoff (1972, p.228) 　

学習英文法では "～ enough that ..." の構文を教えていません。学生は "～ enough that ..." とは言えないと錯覚していますから，学校では (10) のような文は，教えていないだけではなく，ひょっとしたら明示的に文法的ではないと教えているのかもしれません。ここでは (10) のような形が文法的であるということを強調しておきたいと思います。もう少し実例をあげましょう。

(11) In a city once racked with crime and corporate flight, residents seem pleased enough that New York now stands as the safest and most-appealing big city in America.

(12) Panetta said Sunday, "I think this matter is important enough that he should sit down, stare the America people in the eye and do it directly from the Oval Office."

(13) Sentences such as those in [28] are near enough in meaning to those in [29] that they used to be considered transformationally related …

(14) In fact, if you look at the grammar of English and Swahili you are also very likely to find that at some level the grammars are quite similar but different enough, say, in choice of words and so on that people won't be able to communicate.

(15) I am enough of an optimist that I look forward to White's second book on language acquisition.

(16) The world is a messy enough place that a compromise outcome is also envision - able. 　

"～ enough that ..." の意味を確認しておきましょう。次の (17) は "He is old enough to go to school." の意味です。

(17) He is old enough that he can go to school. 　

"～ enough that ..." もよく使われますから学習参考書でももう少し積極的に取り上げるべきではないでしょうか。

▼さらに，"enough" には，次の (18) に見られるように so that節を従える用法もあります。

(18) She is old enough so that she can do some work.--Quirk et al. (1985, §15.73)

すでに見た (14) の文は Noam Chomsky (1984) "Modular Approaches to the Study of the Mind" (San Diego State University Press) という本の中の１文ですが，この文の直前の文は次の (19) です。

(19) For example, if you come from a very different dialect area than I do our grammars may be virtually identical but nevertheless different enough in their peripheral properties so that we really can't communicate without difficulty.

この文では "enough" の後に so thatが出てきています。もう１つ例をあげましょう。

(20) Other situations in which the type of indirect negative evidence suggested above would not be an aid to acquisition might include [...] cases in which there is no construction which is closely enough related semantically to the target structure so that the child would be able to infer that the speaker would have used the target construction if possible.

▼"～ enough that ..." が教えられていないくらいですから，"～ enough so that ..." が教えられていなくても当然でしょう。 　

"～ enough to ..." を使うということを一生懸命教えているうちに，それ以外の "～ enough that ..." とか "～ enough so that ..." とかを使ってはいけないと錯覚してしまいがちなので，教える立場にある人は，実際の英語ではどうかということに絶えず注意を払っておく必要があります。 "enough" とほぼ同義の "sufficiently" も "enough"同様，to不定詞，that節，so that節を従えることができます。

(21) ... and the chances are that you didn't learn any even at school (unless you are sufficiently old to have forgotten most of it now).

(22) In general, the picture of language that emerges is sufficiently unfamiliar that many questions will have to be rethought, if it proves.

(23) In the perceptual deictic construction, there refers to a location in nonvisual perceptual space at a time that either is present or in the recent past, sufficiently recent so that the image (say the auditory image) still persists. 　

▼今日は，(i) "～ enough to ..." と "so ～ that ..." が同じ意味ではないということと，(ii) "～ enough to ..." と "so ～ as to ..." の違い，(iii) "～ enough that ..." ， "～ enough so that ..." のバリエーションもあるということ，(iv) "sufficiently ～ to ..."，"sufficiently ～ that ..."，"sufficiently ～ so that ..." のバリエーションもあるということ，の３つのことをお話ししました。
